Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president. He helped free African Americans from slavery. When Abraham Lincoln was elected, North Carolina and six other states seceded from the union because they knew that Lincoln would try to end slavery. They called themselves The Confederate States Of America.
About a year later they attacked the Union. In the war almost a million people died. When the war ended the north had won. Three days later, to celebrate that the North had won, Abraham Lincoln went to a play with his wife. A man named John Wilkes Booth was mad that Lincoln had abolished slavery. While Abraham Lincoln was watching the play, Booth snuck behind Lincoln and shot him. He died a day later.
